EATING WELL WITH CANADA'S FOOD GUIDE
The nutrition information on this site is based on the recommendations of Canada's
Food Guide (CFG), which is published by the federal government agency, Health Canada.
The purpose of the Guide is to help people make wise food choices. It is not a rigid
set of rules, but rather a set of flexible guidelines.
CFG is intended for people over the age of two. The information in the link below,
and elsewhere on this site, should NOT be used for younger children, toddlers and
infants. Consult a physician for help with their dietary needs.
HOW TO READ CANADA'S FOOD GUIDE
CFG places food into four groups: Vegetables & Fruit, Grain Products, Milk & Alternatives and Meat & Alternatives.
These groups are represented by a "rainbow" diagram that shows which foods belong in which groups.
The next two pages of CFG show how many servings you should have per day and serving sizes for various foods. Exact servings per day will depend on age, body size, activity level, sex, pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Many foods don't fit into any category on CFG. These so-called "other" foods include
candy, pop and salty snacks that have few nutrients
and often contain high levels of sugar, fat and salt. They can be eaten in moderation,
but have no role in a healthy diet.
