Canada's Guidelines For Healthy Eating
Canada's Guidelines for Healthy Eating have been designed to help people make good
food choices. These are the five components of the guidelines:
Enjoy a VARIETY of foods –
this helps you to get all of the nutrients your body needs each day.
Emphasize cereals, breads, other grain products, vegetables and
fruit – this helps you to get the vitamins and minerals your body needs
each day. It also helps you to get enough fibre, which also helps to keep you healthy.
Choose lower fat dairy products, leaner meats, and foods prepared
with little or no fat – this helps you to reduce the
amount of fat that you eat each day. This helps you to have a healthy body weight
and can protect you from many diseases.
Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight by enjoying regular
physical activity and healthy eating – a healthy body
weight is important in protecting you from many diseases, as well as to give you
lots of energy and to feel good about yourself.
Limit salt, alcohol, and caffeine – these are substances
your body does not need, so replace them with foods and nutrients that will help
your body to grow and develop to its potential.
