Canada's Guidelines For Healthy Eating

Canada's Guidelines for Healthy Eating have been designed to help people make good food choices. These are the five components of the guidelines:

  •  Enjoy a VARIETY of foods – this helps you to get all of the nutrients your body needs each day.

•  Emphasize cereals, breads, other grain products, vegetables and fruit – this helps you to get the vitamins and minerals your body needs each day. It also helps you to get enough fibre, which also helps to keep you healthy.

•  Choose lower fat dairy products, leaner meats, and foods prepared with little or no fat – this helps you to reduce the amount of fat that you eat each day. This helps you to have a healthy body weight and can protect you from many diseases.

•  Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight by enjoying regular physical activity and healthy eating – a healthy body weight is important in protecting you from many diseases, as well as to give you lots of energy and to feel good about yourself.

•  Limit salt, alcohol, and caffeine – these are substances your body does not need, so replace them with foods and nutrients that will help your body to grow and develop to its potential.
