MEAL TIPS

  • Families are more likely to embrace healthy eating if food is prepared in tasty, appetizing and unique ways. A little extra effort in cooking can pay off with healthier eating habits for everyone.
  • Be sure to include foods from at least 3 of the 4 food groups at each meal.
  • Colour combinations are very important to the appetizing appearance of a plate of food. Try to maintain a food's natural colour, and offer a mixture of colours on the plate.
  • Our flavour goal should be to achieve a balance of sweet, sour, salty, bitter, strong and spicy.
  • Try to have just one strong flavour in the meal.
  • Avoid repeating flavours in the meal.
  • Avoid more than one sweet accompaniment to the main course.
  • Try for contrasting textures in your meals: hard, soft, chewy and crisp.
  • It's preferable to have only one sauce in any meal.
  • Variations in shape and size of the food served adds visual interest.
  • It's a good idea to serve foods of varying temperatures, and to make sure that each dish is the right temperature for best flavour.
  • Variety, variety, variety. Even if it's just making the same thing a different way, changing the cooking method or presentation will keep the family interested.
