Gross Out

TaylorYuck! Sometimes I learn something really gross about our bodies.

I put it here, because nobody wants it anywhere else! Go ahead and check it out...if you like that kind of thing!

BELCHES

Where do belches and burps come from?

When you eat, you swallow a lot of air. There’s also gasses in the food you eat, especially pop and other carbonated drinks. The gas can’t stay in your stomach, so it has to escape. Some goes the other way and becomes a fart . But most of it comes right back up the way it came in...through your mouth!

What makes that gross belching noise?

When belch gasses leave your stomach, they have to pass through an organ called the cardia. The cardia is kind of like a door between your esophagus and your stomach. Normally, it keeps the stuff in your stomach from coming back up into your throat (gross!). But when you belch, the gasses are forced past this one-way door, causing it to vibrate. When something vibrates, it makes a sound, and when your cardia vibrates, it produces the sound of a burp.

Why can I sometimes taste the food I ate hours ago when I burp?

Because the gasses are coming from where the food is! Digesting a meal can take hours, so when the gasses that create a belch pass the cardia some fluids from the stomach can travel back up into your mouth with them. You’re literally tasting your dinner twice!

Are belches bad for you?

Though some people think they’re rude, belches are really a natural thing that happens to everyone sometimes. Don’t forget to cover your mouth and say “Excuse me”!
