FARTS

Where do farts come from?

You swallow a lot of air when you eat, and there’s air trapped in some kinds of food and carbonated drinks, like pop. All that air has to go somewhere! Also, your digestive system produces gasses when it breaks down certain kinds of food. Some of the gas is burped out, but the rest escapes out your butt! That’s a fart.

Why do farts stink?

Most of the gas in a fart doesn’t smell at all! But some gasses have traces of sulphur in them, and sulphur is super stinky! Sometimes when you fart, small amounts of poop might spray out (leaving skid marks) and that smells even worse. Ewwwwwwww!

Does some food make you fart more?

Here’s a list of some major fart-producing foods: beans, lentils, milk, onions, radish, sweet potatoes, cheese, cashews, broccoli, cabbage, oats, yeast in breads. The stinkiest fart gasses are produced when you digest proteins like beans, milk and cheese.

Where does the noise come from?

Fart gasses are under pressure in your butt, like a balloon that’s going to pop. When they finally escape, they make your butt vibrate, which makes a noise. Press your lips together hard and blow through them. Sounds like a fart, right? Same thing.

Are farts bad for you?

No way! You’ve got to get rid of that gas somehow, right? Since they are so stinky, it’s polite to go to the bathroom if you feel a fart coming on.
