PEE
Tip of the day: Never eat yellow snow.
What is it?
Pee, or urine, is liquid waste that is taken out of your blood by your kidneys,
collected in your bladder,
and finally peed out through your urethra.
It’s mostly water, with a lot of this stuff called urea
and various other substances that your kidneys have scrubbed out of your blood.
There’s also a lot of salt in urine.
Because your pee is waste from your blood, doctors can tell a lot about your health
by studying it.
Why is it yellow?
There’s a substance in your blood called hemoglobin that transports oxygen from
your lungs to the rest of your body. When this substance gets old and breaks down,
it makes stuff called urochrome. Urochrome just happens to be bright yellow! Your
kidneys filter the urochrome out of your blood and pass it through your urine.
Is pee dangerous or bad for you?
When it first comes out, pee is actually quite safe. Long ago, fresh urine was used
by doctors to wash wounds! But bacteria grow very quickly in pee once it leaves
the body, so you should avoid contact with it.
