SNOT
What is snot?
Snot is really called nasal mucus. It’s slimy stuff that is produced by a
gland in your sinuses, which are like tunnels in the bone around your nose. It’s
clear when it’s runny, but looks green or yellowish when it dries.
What good is it?
Snot catches dust and dirt that enters your nose and hardens around it, forming
boogers. This is gross, but it’s better than if the dirt got up into your
sinuses, where it could block things up or cause infections. If you do get an infection
in your sinuses from a virus or bacteria, your body sheds some of these microscopic
attackers through your snot.
Where does it go if I don’t blow my nose?
Your sinuses are producing more snot all the time. Some of it hardens into boogers,
but most of it is swallowed! Eeeeewwwwwwwwwww!
Is snot dangerous or bad for you?
Snot can carry bacteria and viruses. You should avoid contact with other people’s
snot, and put your used tissues in a covered garbage can.
